At PARKING DAY, we demonstrate for the mobility transition by reclaiming parking spaces from cars. For one day, they become small parks, neighborhood tables, stages, gardens, or play areas.
PARKING DAY is an international demonstration: it was founded in 2005 by the collective Rebar in San Francisco, when they spontaneously turned a single parking space into a small park. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide movement, with parking spaces repurposed for a day each September in cities around the globe.
On Leipzig's Eisenbahnstraße, the action takes place in 2026 for the fourth time already – organized by a loose coalition of residents and initiatives, coordinated by Verkehrswende Leipzig.

Theme & Demands 2026
PARKING DAY takes place during European Mobility Week.
The action alliance is demonstrating for the following demands:
- More greenery and climate-adapted streets
- Safer sidewalks for all age groups
- Safe cycling infrastructure
- Affordable, expanded public transit
- Fair distribution of public space
- Preventing displacement through urban development

For one day, the street belongs to us! With cozy seating, your balcony plants, decorations, games, and whatever else you can think of, once the cars clear the tracks!

How to join in? We've registered all the parking spaces on Eisenbahnstraße between Torgauer Platz and Hermann-Liebmann-Straße for our demonstration – they'll be empty on September 20! Now it's up to you to fill the gaps. Already have an idea? Fill out the registration here! In it, we want to know how you plan to use your space so we can plan where you'll get a spot (for example, we want to avoid two bands playing right next to each other, or cake being sold directly in front of a café), what time period you'll be there, how many people will be there, and who the contact person for the space will be. You can also indicate whether you need a beer-garden set (table and 2 benches) – for that, though, we'll need your help carrying it.

Does participating cost anything?
No, neither registering a parking space nor just stopping by costs anything. We're happy you're joining us! At PARKING DAY itself, we'll be collecting voluntary donations to cover organizational costs.
Who registers the parking space?
The action alliance handles the formal registration with the city. Participants then design their own space.
By when can I register that I want to design a parking space?
Registration closes on September 4, 2026. Register here.
I haven't registered a space, can I still come?
Yes, of course! Come by and enjoy a day without cars and full of creativity!
